The Fuuuuuuuuture

Okay, I wanted to leave a quick post because I'm going out of town, and there are a few really good shows that I'm already regretting missing. In the last few posts I dispensed with gushing over the bands I saw and actually had the nerve to criticize. This time, I'll resume gushing, but instead of writing about the past, I'll tell you a little about the future.

I told you I'd review the Venom Lords this weekend. Well, as I said, I won't be able to see them at Mutiny (2428 N. Western) Saturday, but that doesn't mean you can't stop by. I have seen them before, though, and here's my short review, since I have to leave soon:

At first I didn't think too much of them; they were just another band opening for the one I came to see. Sometimes, my attention is diverted. Sometimes, I just don't listen. However, I picked up their 4-song CD last time I saw them, and you know what? I can't get these songs out of my head. I find myself going to listen to that stabbing guitar again and again.

Next on the list is the triumphant return of the Moses Gun, in not one but two, yes two, shows. Tonight (Friday) at Bar Vertigo (853 N. Western) Vell and Ricardo operate as an acoustic duo while they search for a new drummer. Then they celebrate Independence Day by rocking out at Phyllis' Musical Inn (1800 W. Division St.) with a guest drummer. I was listening to some of their demo CDs, and thought I caught a reminiscence of Nirvana or Pearl Jam in the guitar and bass, but the rest of it doesn't quite fit. Of course, I could be way off on that mark, and I usually am. I have a good tip on who the new drummer might be, but I'm not ready to give that out just yet. That person may be able to take them there, for after all, I've heard it said the drums drive the band. They're definitely in a transition stage and no doubt re-defining their sound as I write. Go to one or both of these shows this weekend to catch a glimpse of what that new sound might be.

More details are on the calendar to the left. Liam, this note is especially for you: click on the event link for details, yo! By the way, did you know you can leave comments on the events, too? Check it out! Have a happy fourth; I'll see you all next week.
